Wildlife Friendly Flood Lights

As much as LED lights are the wave of the future for outdoor lighting, there has been one major drawback for them. A study conducted had concluded that LED lights draw in almost 50% more bugs that are attracted to lights. This isn’t as much of a concern for the LED lights that are indoors but it can present a problem for the outdoor flood lights, at least until Access Fixtures in Massachusetts created a brand new string of flood lights meant for the outdoors but not harmful or drawing to the animals in the area.

These LED flood lights work by being visible to humans as an amber colored light, but to almost all other species that are affected by artificial light they won’t be able to see it. This is one of the distinct advantages to LED lights in general. We can make LED lightingit so they only broadcast a certain wavelength of light, compared to incandescent bulbs that have to be manufactured to make sure they aren’t giving off the right kinds of light.

Most species of animals can’t even see the amber wavelength of light that humans can. Dogs in the past are most notable for not being able to see colored light but in this case, it just doesn’t register to the animals and therefore causes no draw to them. Together with the savings of most LED lights in energy it makes these amber flood lights one of the most environmentally friendly lights to exist and the process can certainly be done with other LED lights, which means we may reach a point where we can have artificial lights everywhere without upsetting things like turtles trying to get to the ocean.
