Is Your City Smart?

If you follow our blog or keep a close eye on trends and what’s being reported in the news then you know that LEDs have their eco-friendly fingers in just about every industry, whether it’s supermarket coupons or the illumination spouted off by bridges in all corners of America. More importantly perhaps than that is that countries and cities are recognizing that LEDs are an integral cog in social growth and improvement. In this case, LEDs are really the keys that’ll open the doors to the future. Think of these cities as being smart, understanding the potential and power of this evolving technology. China is on the LED bandwagon and will be riding it for the near future.

China, with its large populating and booming economy, is the fastest growing country in the world and, as a result, the country is seeking out ways to improve infrastructure and make life smoother for its citizens, and this involves LED lights.

In this San Francisco Chronicle article, it is reported, “Some 4 billion ordinary streetlights are being converted to new, bright, energy-efficient LED lights. Technology makes each of those new lights into a networking point where sensors and computer circuitry can gather and manage all of the data needed to make a city truly smart. This information is made available through an open application interface, much like an app store. This helps cities manage public safety, control parking, perform pollution monitoring, and manage municipal assets and equipment.”

With all those benefits, many analysts and LED companies are wondering why America hasn’t fully embraced this technology. Although some cities are reconfiguring their infrastructure with LED technology, many more are resisting the temptation. As we move into the future and countries like China experience more success with LED lights, American cities will be eager to make the switch.

What do you think? Has your city embraced LED technology and, if not, why hasn’t it?
