How to Layer Your Outdoor Lighting

There are three basic types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent; each adding their own element to the bigger picture. All three are necessary for a cohesive landscape lighting design.

Here are just a few tips to help you layer your lighting properly on your property!

Set a foundation with ambient lighting

There’s nothing like ambience: any room or outdoor space can be given a mood or personality through ambient lighting.

Home Landscape Lighting Let’s look first to the porch. A porch is an ample area for ambient light; if you have ceilings, hang a light that can create a nice dim, setting the tone of the room that you can see from afar. If you don’t have ceilings, small wall lights are also a great place to start.

Build with task lighting

Now that you have your ambience set on the porch, you’ll need some task lighting to flow from the house, to welcome your guests and yourself at night.

This can be done in a variety of ways.

Think of motion-sensor lights along the pathways, that turn on when you walk by. Or consider landscape lights along your garden beds or shrubbery lines, which will create a few nice pockets of brightness throughout your yard.

Finish with accent lights!

To tie it all together, we have accent lighting.

Have fun with this one: add some decorative lights where needed!

By doing so, you can create ‘places’ on your property, that will draw attention to certain spots that you’d like to highlight.

And voila: your backyard has a personality!
